Last year, Canton launched a residential Food Compost Pilot Program to help reduce the amount of food waste being sent to landfills. Composting is a sustainable alternative to disposing of food waste that turns the material into rich, healthy soil.
Since the start of the program, over 165,000 pounds of food waste has been diverted from the landfill. This year, Canton is hoping to divert even more by opening up the program to more volunteers. Participants will receive a 2.5-gallon bucket with a lid, a sticker displaying the list of acceptable food waste, and a guide listing program information. There are currently four designated food compost drop-off locations for volunteers to use; the Summit on the Park, Walker Winter School, the Canton Farmers Market and Fire Station #2.
