Specially-trained accident investigators and re-constructionists comprise the team, which is called into action 15 to 20 times per year. The team is most commonly used to investigate fatal accidents and accidents involving life-threatening injuries. Once activated, the team handles all aspects of the accident scene.
Technology has enhanced scene processing allowing for electronic collection of measurements and evidence collection through the use of a "total station." Accident Investigation Team members often utilize the use of the department's Mobile Command Unit providing additional equipment and resources for the officers use.
